What does the Bible say about substitution?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that Christ was made to be the substitute for His people, bearing their sin and guilt.

The doctrine of substitution is central to the gospel, emphasizing that Jesus Christ took the place of His people in bearing their sin and guilt. Matthew 26 illustrates this during Christ's trial, where He humbly accepted false accusations, fulfilling the punishment that His people deserved (Isaiah 50:6). The prophetic fulfillment indicates that Christ's suffering was intentional, as He opened His ear to the Father's will and bore the sins of those chosen by God, thus becoming their substitute in death and judgment. By taking our guilt upon Himself, He allows us to be seen as innocent before God.
