What does the Bible say about suffering and illness?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that suffering and illness can be part of God's sovereign plan for our good.

According to Scripture, suffering and illness are not necessarily a sign of God's displeasure; rather, they can serve to draw our affections away from worldly things toward eternal realities. In John 11, the story of Lazarus illustrates that sickness, like trials, can be used by God to prove our faith and increase our reliance on Him. This is evident as Lazarus, beloved by Jesus, faced illness and eventual death. Such experiences remind us to turn to prayer and Scripture, demonstrating that our hope is ultimately founded in Christ and His sovereignty over our circumstances.
