What does the Bible say about taking the name of the Lord in vain?

Answered in 3 sources

Exodus 20:7 teaches that we must not take the name of the Lord in vain, meaning we should never treat God's name lightly or with irreverence.

The phrase 'take the name of the Lord thy God in vain' in Exodus 20:7 warns us against using God's name in a trivial or disrespectful manner. To take His name in vain is to treat it as if it holds no significance or reverence. This includes using His name in cursing or swearing, but more profoundly, it encompasses any misuse of His name that fails to honor His holiness and majesty. John Gill comments that we ought to mention His name only in a grave and serious manner, showing the appropriate reverence for who He is—a majestic God deserving of our utmost respect and awe. Therefore, the command calls us to a life that recognizes and upholds the sanctity of God's name.
