What does the Bible say about the atonement?

Answered in 7 sources

The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ willingly offered Himself as a sacrifice to bear the sins of His people, fulfilling God's eternal plan for salvation.

The atonement is a central theme in scripture, emphasizing how Jesus Christ offered Himself as a willing sacrifice for sins. In John 18:4, it is made clear that Jesus, knowing all that would happen, voluntarily went to the cross. He submitted to the Father’s will and suffered, fulfilling the prophecy that one man should die for the people (John 11:50). This act of atonement was not just a mere consequence of human wickedness but was according to the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God (Acts 2:23). Through His death, Christ addressed the justice of God, satisfying the requirements of the law and providing redemption for those who believe. Thus, through the atonement, God’s plan culminates in the forgiveness of sins and the justification of sinners (Acts 13:39).
