What does the Bible say about the conflict of self and Christ?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that self must be overthrown for Christ to reign supreme in our hearts.

Scripture reveals a deep conflict between the desires of the self and the lordship of Christ. As seen in Ezekiel 21:27, God promises to overturn every idol that draws our affections away from Him. The struggle arises when we, motivated by self-interest, attempt to place our desires above Christ's authority. However, the Lord demands our hearts and will not allow anything to rival His position, leading to a painful process where self is diminished, and Christ is exalted.
