What does the Bible say about the covenant of works?

Answered in 2 sources

The covenant of works, established in Exodus, is a divine agreement where Israel's blessings were contingent upon their obedience to God's commandments.

The covenant of works is introduced in Exodus 19, where Jehovah proposes to enter into a covenant with Israel, making their national blessing dependent on their obedience to His commandments (Exodus 19:5-6). The people unanimously agreed to this covenant, indicating their commitment to live in accordance with God's law. However, it's critical to understand that this covenant was established not for their access to God, which is only through Christ, but as a means of testing their obedience. Even before any failings were recorded, God's assertion that man cannot approach Him on the basis of his own works was made clear (Exodus 24:1-2). This reflects the limitations of the law and underscores the indispensable necessity of Christ's work to secure genuine communion with God.
