The true essence of Scripture is to point us to Christ. The Pharisees diligently studied the Scriptures but failed to see that their ultimate purpose was to testify of Jesus (John 5:39). Thus, without the Spirit's work in our hearts, we risk being ensnared by the letter while neglecting the life-giving truth it conveys.
