What does the Bible say about the First and Second Covenants?

Answered in 1 source

The First Covenant requires obedience to the law for life, while the Second Covenant, through Christ, offers salvation based on grace.

The First Covenant, established with Israel, mandated that obedience to the law would lead to life. In Deuteronomy 8:1, God explicitly states, 'If you obey my commandments, you will live.' However, the issue lies with humanity's inability to keep this covenant, leading to sin and death. In contrast, the Second Covenant, as described in Hebrews 8, is established through Christ, reflecting a commitment by God to offer salvation through grace. This covenant promises that God will write His laws on our hearts and be merciful to our unrighteousness, making the previous covenant obsolete. As Hebrews 8:12 states, 'For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.'
