What does the Bible say about the flesh and spirit in Romans 7?

Answered in 1 source

Romans 7 explains that the flesh is a corrupt nature in all humans, while the spirit represents the new nature given by God to believers.

In Romans 7, Paul articulates the ongoing conflict between the flesh and the spirit in every believer. The 'flesh' refers to our fallen, corrupt nature inherited from Adam, which in itself produces no good (Romans 7:18). In contrast, the 'spirit' signifies the new nature created in believers upon being born again by the Spirit of God—this new man is capable of genuine righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). The tension between these two natures produces an internal struggle, reflecting the true Christian experience of sanctification.
