What does the Bible say about the flesh and the Spirit?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible contrasts the workings of the flesh with the Spirit, emphasizing that the flesh seeks selfish gain while the Spirit brings grace and freedom.

In Acts 16, we see the conflict between the flesh and the Spirit illustrated through the actions of those who opposed Paul and Silas. The flesh operates on self-interest and seeks to control others, as seen in the actions of the masters of the possessed damsel who were upset over their financial loss (Acts 16:19). In contrast, the Spirit, through Christ, brings both freedom and the genuine ability to rejoice, even amidst suffering. The struggle between these two forces shows that while the flesh may seek to restrict and confine, the Spirit invites us into a life of grace and joyful worship—indicative of the salvation we have through Christ Jesus.
