What does the Bible say about the role of a scribe?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible describes scribes as guardians and teachers of God's Word, responsible for accurately copying and interpreting Scripture.

In the biblical context, scribes held a critical role as protectors and communicators of God's written revelation. Initially functioning as caretakers of the Law given to Moses, their responsibility evolved into a specialized group dedicated to ensuring the Scriptures were copied accurately and taught clearly to the people. Ezra is often highlighted as a notable scribe who was described as 'ready' or 'skillful,' indicating he was well-versed in Scripture, capable of teaching the statutes of God to the Israelites (Ezra 7:6, 10). Unfortunately, over time, the role of the scribes diminished as many became more concerned with human traditions and legalism rather than upholding the true intent of God's laws.
