What does the Bible say about the role of priests?

Answered in 3 sources

In the Bible, priests serve as mediators between God and people, authorized to perform sacred rites, which ultimately point to the sole mediator, Christ.

The role of priests in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament, is foundational and serves to highlight the sacred connection between God and His people. Priests were set apart by God, specifically from the tribe of Levi, to perform the duties of the sacrificial system and mediate on behalf of the people. This office involved entering the Holy of Holies and offering sacrifices to atone for the sins of the Israelites. However, these priests were merely shadows of the ultimate priest — the Lord Jesus Christ — who fulfills the role completely. Jesus, as our Great High Priest, represents us perfectly before God, having entered not a man-made sanctuary but heaven itself to offer His own blood for our redemption.
