What does the Bible say about the soul after death?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that the soul does not sleep but departs to be with the Lord after death.

According to Scripture, when a believer dies, their body may perish, but their soul lives on. The Apostle Paul eloquently states in 2 Corinthians 5:8 that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. This is comforting for Christians who have lost loved ones in Christ, as it assures them that their souls are not in a state of dormancy but are alive and with the Lord. The experience of Rachel at the time of childbirth and the naming of her child Benoni (son of sorrow) serves as a reminder of the physical struggles in life, yet highlights the distinction between the perishing of the body and the eternal existence of the soul, which departs to a heavenly abode for believers.
