What does the Bible say about tithing in the church?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible does not command Christians to tithe; New Testament giving is based on grace and not obligation.

The concept of tithing as a command for Christians is unsupported in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul emphasizes in 2 Corinthians 9 that each individual should give as they have decided in their heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion. This indicates a move away from the Old Testament requirement of a fixed percentage, as seen in Malachi 3, toward a model of grace-driven generosity. The church is not the Temple, Jesus is the high priest of a better covenant, and the New Testament does not include tithing among its teachings for the Gentile church. Rather, giving is meant to be a reflection of the grace of God working within the believer.
