What does the Bible say about true contrition?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that true contrition is a broken and contrite heart, which God does not despise (Psalm 51:17).

The Scriptures clearly indicate that true contrition involves a heart that is humbled by sin and acknowledges one's inability to atone for it. Psalm 34:18 says, 'The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.' A contrite heart recognizes the weight of one’s sin and the necessary dependence on God's grace for forgiveness. True contrition is not achieved through human effort or works but is a divine gift that aligns with the reality of God’s justice and mercy as seen in Christ’s sacrifice.
