What does the Bible say about women speaking in church?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible affirms women can speak in church, particularly in prayer and prophesy, while restricting authoritative teaching over men.

The Apostle Paul specifically mentions that women are to learn in silence but does not imply total silence during assembly. In 1 Corinthians 11:5, he acknowledges that women will pray and prophesy, indicating that their voices are a vital part of the assembly's life. The silence mentioned in 1 Timothy 2:12 is explicitly about authoritative teaching and usurping authority, not about women being completely quiet. In fact, throughout Scripture, we see numerous examples of women contributing significantly to the church's life and mission.

For instance, Priscilla taught Apollos the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26), and Mary Magdalene was the first to announce the resurrection of Christ (John 20:17). This illustrates that while there are roles defined within the church, the holistic participation of women in non-authoritative ways enriches the church community and upholds their gifts within the boundaries set by Scripture.
