What does the Bible teach about the nature of God's justice and mercy?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that God's justice and mercy are perfectly balanced in Christ's atonement, satisfying justice while extending mercy to the guilty.

God's justice and mercy are two sides of the same coin in the Christian faith. In salvation history, both divine attributes converge at the cross. God's justice requires that sin be dealt with, while His mercy desires to save the sinner. Christ's sacrifice on the cross embodies this balance; He took upon Himself the punishment that we deserve, thereby satisfying God's justice. Simultaneously, this act of substitution opens the floodgates of mercy, allowing guilty sinners to be declared righteous before God. As Romans 3:25-26 illustrates, God is both just and the justifier of those who have faith in Jesus. Therefore, understanding the interplay between justice and mercy deepens our appreciation for the grace we receive in Christ.
