What does the Bible teach about the nature of prayer?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible teaches that prayer is both a spoken expression and a silent meditation of the heart that God fully understands.

The nature of prayer is beautifully captured in the Scriptures, particularly in the Psalms. Prayer involves not just words that we utter, but also the meditations and groanings of our hearts. David, in Psalm 5, instructs us to approach God with our spoken requests while also recognizing that there are aspects of our lives and desires that we cannot fully articulate. This is echoed in Romans 8:26, where the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Thus, prayer encompasses various forms of expression – both verbal and non-verbal – illustrating that God, in His omniscience, perceives the intentions and longings of our hearts even when they remain unspoken.
