What does the Bible teach about total depravity?

Answered in 6 sources

The Bible teaches that total depravity means all aspects of humanity are affected by sin, rendering us unable to save ourselves.

Total depravity is a key doctrine in Reformed theology, affirming that every aspect of humanity—mind, will, and emotions—is affected by the fall into sin. This means that no person has the ability or inclination to seek God or do good without divine intervention. Romans 3:9 underscores this by stating that all are under sin. Every human being is corrupted by sin, which influences our thoughts, desires, and actions. As a result, we are spiritually bankrupt, lacking any capacity for saving ourselves. Only through God's sovereign grace, made manifest in Christ, can we be redeemed and restored. The recognition of our total depravity is vital because it highlights our need for grace and the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration.
