What does total depravity mean in the context of willingness?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity signifies that man is unable to choose good without divine intervention; his will is enslaved to sin.

Total depravity teaches that every aspect of humanity is affected by sin, thus rendering individuals incapable of making spiritually positive choices without God's intervention. As articulated in Ephesians 2:1, we are described as 'dead in trespasses and sins,' indicating our total inability to respond to God on our own. This means that any willingness to serve or give comes only when God, in His mercy, chooses to transform the heart and make one willing. Hence, the will is not free in the sense often understood by society; instead, it operates under the dominion of sin until God's grace intervenes and frees it to respond joyfully to His call.
