What happens after death for a Christian?

Answered in 1 source

A Christian's soul goes directly to heaven to be with the Lord immediately after death.

Upon a believer's death, Scripture reveals that their spirit is immediately taken to be with the Lord. As stated in 2 Corinthians 5:8, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, indicating there is no period of unconsciousness or waiting. This is reinforced by the example of the thief on the cross, who joined Jesus in paradise the same day he died (Luke 23:43). Therefore, Christians do not merely sleep in their graves; rather, they transition directly into heavenly glory where they await the resurrection of their bodies. It affirms a fundamental aspect of Christian eschatology—believers enter into eternal life in the immediate presence of their Savior.
