What happens when couples neglect their first love for each other?

Answered in 1 source

Neglecting first love in marriage can lead to complacency and vulnerability to temptation, ultimately harming the relationship.

When couples allow their first love for each other to wane, they risk falling into complacency, which can create an environment conducive to temptation from within and without. As described in 1 Corinthians 7:5, a lack of mutual love and attention can lead to a decrease in self-control, opening the door for Satan to create discord and strife in the marriage. Moreover, this neglect can spill over into their relationship with Christ, as a lukewarm affection towards one another can also reflect a dwindling passion for the Lord. Therefore, it is imperative for spouses to actively rekindle that spark of love through intentional actions and reminders of their initial commitment to one another and to Christ, ensuring their marriage remains strong and our witness to others remains faithful.
