What happens when someone turns away from the gospel?

Answered in 1 source

Turning away from the gospel means rejecting Christ and returning to a reliance on works rather than faith, which leads to spiritual peril.

In Galatians 1:6-7, Paul expresses astonishment that some have turned away from the grace of Christ to a so-called different gospel, which is actually no gospel at all. This act of turning away signifies a departure from Christ Himself, a serious and dangerous decision for any believer. Theologically, when one turns from the gospel—which is centered on Christ's redemptive work—they inherently turn towards works-based righteousness. This transition is fraught with peril, as the New Testament warns against the futility of relying on one’s works for salvation (Hebrews 10:26). Such a shift undermines the very foundation of the Christian faith and leads to a loss of grace and peace.
