What is grace in the context of salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Grace is unmerited favor from God, allowing sinners to be saved through Christ's sacrifice.

In the Christian doctrine of salvation, grace is understood as the unearned favor and mercy God extends to sinners. According to Ephesians 2:8-9, we are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from ourselves; it is the gift of God. This means that no one can boast about their actions or worthiness since salvation is wholly based on what Christ accomplished on the cross. Grace allows God to remain just while justifying the ungodly (Romans 4:5), as He punishes sin in Christ rather than in the sinner. Therefore, grace is foundational to understanding the entirety of salvation—it's entirely based on God's sovereign will and not on human merit.
