What is hyper-grace and why is it problematic?

Answered in 1 source

Hyper-grace is the belief that grace permits sin, which distorts the true teachings of Scripture.

Hyper-grace is often characterized by the notion that because grace abounds, believers can continue in sin without consequence. However, this misunderstanding undermines the call to holiness that Scripture establishes. Paul addresses this in Romans, asserting that grace should not be interpreted as permission to sin but as empowerment to overcome it (Romans 6:1-2). The problem with a hyper-grace perspective is that it leads to a disregard for obedience and the seriousness of sin, advocating a lifestyle contrary to the transformation that Christ brings. This doctrine can subtly encourage rebellious attitudes towards God's commands, compromising the integrity of the gospel message.
