What is the danger of self-justification?

Answered in 1 source

Self-justification leads to a false sense of security and alienation from God’s grace.

Self-justification is a perilous stance that many fall into, particularly within religious contexts. It embodies a belief that one can declare themselves righteous and be secure before God based on personal virtue or morality. This is vividly illustrated in Luke 18:9-14, where the Pharisee represents those who trust in their actions, believing they are better than others. Such a mindset sets individuals against the truth of God's Word, which states that all have sinned and fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23). Self-justification breeds pride and leads to judgmental attitudes towards others, effectively distancing the individual from God’s grace, which only meets the humble and broken-hearted (Matthew 5:3). In Christian doctrine, salvation is only found in acknowledging our deficiencies and trusting solely in the righteousness of Christ.
