What is the difference between positional and conditional forgiveness?

Answered in 1 source

Positional forgiveness is our legal standing before God, while conditional forgiveness relates to our ongoing fellowship with Him (1 John 1:9).

Positional forgiveness, as understood in reformed theology, is achieved through Christ's work on the cross and is a permanent state for believers; it does not change regardless of subsequent actions. Conditional forgiveness, on the other hand, pertains to the ongoing fellowship with God and is contingent upon the confession of sin (1 John 1:9). This distinction is crucial as it underscores that while believers are justified in Christ and maintain their relationship with God, they must actively engage in confession to restore and maintain fellowship with Him.
