What is the nature of modern idolatry?

Answered in 1 source

Modern idolatry often manifests in the form of materialism, relationships, and personal desires over God.

While ancient idols were often physical representations of false gods, modern idolatry takes on subtler forms. Idols today can be material possessions, status, relationships, or even pursuits such as career success, education, or entertainment. These priorities can dominate our thoughts and affections, pulling us away from our devotion to Christ. The true test of what we idolize lies in self-examination—asking ourselves what captures our thoughts and affections the most. When we recognize these modern idols, we must actively resist and redirect our worship toward God alone, as cautioned in 1 John 5:21.
