What is the problem with self-righteousness according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness is condemned as it leads individuals away from the true righteousness of God.

The Bible consistently warns against self-righteousness, as evidenced in Romans 9:30-33, which articulates the failure of the Jews to attain righteousness through the law because they sought it by their own efforts rather than by faith. Self-righteousness breeds a reliance on personal merit, which ultimately leads to deception and spiritual blindness. This ignorance of God's righteousness results in pursuing one's righteousness, which falls short of God's holiness and does not bring salvation. Instead, true righteousness is found only in submitting to Christ, who embodies the fulfillment of the Law and the perfect sacrifice for sin.
