What is the purpose of suffering according to Scripture?

Answered in 1 source

The purpose of suffering, as shown in Scripture, is to refine our faith and draw us into deeper communion with Christ.

Scripture reveals that suffering serves multiple purposes within the life of a believer. It tests and refines our faith, much like gold is refined in fire (1 Peter 1:7). Paul tells us in Romans 5:3-4 that suffering produces endurance, character, and hope. This process is essential for spiritual growth and maturity. Suffering reminds us of our dependence on God and pushes us toward greater reliance on His promises and character. Furthermore, through our trials, we can experience the comfort of God, which equips us to comfort others in their struggles (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). Thus, suffering is not merely a hardship but a meaningful journey toward becoming more like Christ.
