What is the relationship between faith and righteousness?

Faith and righteousness are distinct yet intimately connected in Christian theology. Righteousness is defined by the obedience of Christ, who fulfilled the law perfectly and provided the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Scripture teaches that we are not justified by our own righteousness, but through faith in Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we believe, we receive the righteousness of Christ as our own. Thus, faith is the means by which we appropriate the righteousness that God freely gives to sinners.
