What is the relationship between justification and sanctification in the gospel?

Answered in 1 source

Justification and sanctification are closely linked, with justification declaring us righteous and sanctification enabling us to live out that righteousness.

In the gospel, justification and sanctification are intertwined processes of salvation. Justification is the act of God whereby He declares a sinner righteous based on faith in Christ, while sanctification is the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life, transforming them into Christ’s image. These two aspects cannot be separated; true faith will inevitably lead to a life of sanctification, as evidenced in Philippians 3 where Paul expresses his longing to be found in Christ and to know Him intimately. This relationship emphasizes that salvation is not just a one-time declaration but an ongoing work of grace within the believer, reflecting the holiness that God has bestowed upon them.
