What is the relationship between mercy and grace?

Answered in 1 source

Mercy and grace are closely related, with mercy being God's compassion towards us and grace being the unmerited favor He bestows.

Mercy and grace are both manifestations of God's love, yet they serve distinct purposes in the life of a believer. Mercy is God's compassion toward sinners, mitigating the punishment that we deserve for our sins. Lamentations 3:22-23 illustrates this by stating that it is through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed. In contrast, grace goes beyond mercy—it is the favor of God that grants us blessings and salvation that we have not earned. In the context of salvation, grace involves a transformative relationship with God, where He saves us and also empowers us to live righteous lives (Titus 2:11-12). Therefore, while mercy spares us from judgment, grace provides us with the gifts necessary for living out our faith.
