What is the relationship between mercy and sin?

Answered in 2 sources

Mercy presupposes the existence of sin, offering forgiveness where judgment is deserved.

In biblical terms, mercy is intrinsically linked to sin. It recognizes that we are guilty and deserving of punishment; however, mercy means that this punishment is withheld. As Romans 9:15 reminds us, God shows mercy upon whom He wills, affirming that mercy is not an automatic entitlement but rather an act of grace towards offenders. It is through the acknowledgment of our sinful nature that we can truly appreciate the depth of God's mercy. This divine mercy is vital because it not only forgives but also restores the sinner, demonstrating God's love and will to forgive fully and without reservation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
