What is the relationship between self-righteousness and true worship?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness can overshadow true worship, as it focuses on our deeds rather than Christ's righteousness.

In Isaiah 58, the people were performing religious acts like fasting while their hearts were far from true worship. They believed their acts were righteous, but God highlighted that their motivations were rooted in self-aggrandizement rather than genuine devotion to Him. True worship comes from recognizing our inability to attain righteousness on our own and relying solely on Christ's redemptive work. Worship should be an outpouring of gratitude for grace received, rather than a means to establish our worthiness. Thus, self-righteousness can inhibit authentic worship by placing the focus on us instead of on God’s glory and grace.
