What is the relationship between the general and effectual calls of God?

Answered in 1 source

The general call offers knowledge of God to all, while the effectual call brings about salvation in the elect.

The general call of God is extended to every person, inviting them to recognize Him through creation, conscience, and the gospel. However, this call does not guarantee a saving response. The effectual call, on the other hand, is specific and results in a definitive transformation; it effectively brings the elect to faith in Christ. For instance, while the general call might be heard through preaching or witnessing, it is the effectual call that grants the conviction, humility, and faith necessary for salvation, as seen in 1 Thessalonians 1:5 where Paul speaks of the gospel coming in power and the Holy Spirit.
