What is the relationship between the law and grace?

Answered in 4 sources

The law and grace are fundamentally opposed; grace cannot be mixed with legalism, as they serve different purposes in salvation.

The relationship between law and grace is essential in understanding the gospel. Grace, as the unmerited favor of God, cannot coexist with the law, which demands perfect obedience. According to Romans 11:6, if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. This means that attempting to fulfill the law undermines the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice and leads to a performance-based faith. In contrast, grace liberates believers from the condemnation of the law, enabling them to live a life of faith and love without the burden of legalistic obligations.
