What is the relationship between the law and righteousness?

Answered in 1 source

The law reveals sin and cannot justify, while righteousness comes through faith in Christ apart from the law.

The law serves to highlight human sinfulness but does not offer justification. Romans 3:20 states, 'By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight.' Rather, righteousness is revealed as separate from the law and is fully realized in Christ. Paul explains that this righteousness is witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, affirming that the law points to the need for a Savior. In Romans 8:4, it is affirmed that Christ fulfilled the law's requirements, giving those who believe a righteous standing before God, hence showing a clear distinction between the law's role and the righteousness available through faith.
