What is the role of imputation in salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Imputation plays a critical role in salvation by transferring the guilt of sin from the believer to Christ, and His righteousness to the believer.

In the framework of sovereign grace theology, imputation is a vital doctrine regarding salvation. When we speak of imputation, particularly in the context of Romans 5, we mean that all who are represented by Adam inherit his sin and death. Conversely, all who believe in Christ participate in His righteousness and life. This double imputation—our sin being charged to Christ and His righteousness being credited to us—is foundational for assurance of salvation. It emphasizes that salvation is not based on works but upon Christ's completed work, highlighting the grace of God in effecting salvation for His people.
