What is the significance of baptism in relation to salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Baptism serves as a visible representation of the believer’s union with Christ in His death and resurrection.

In 1 Peter 3:21, it is stated that 'baptism doth also now save us.' However, this refers not to the physical act of water baptism, but rather to what baptism symbolizes: the believer’s response of faith and the assurance of a good conscience toward God, made possible by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Baptism represents the union with Christ, as Romans 6:4 teaches that 'we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.' Therefore, while baptism is an essential aspect of obedience, it is the faith in Christ's finished work that truly saves.
