What is total depravity according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity means that every aspect of humanity is affected by sin, rendering us unable to save ourselves.

Total depravity is a core doctrine in Reformed theology that asserts that every part of human nature is tainted by sin due to the fall of Adam. Scripture teaches in Ephesians 2:1 that we were dead in our trespasses and sins, indicating that without divine intervention, we cannot come to God or do anything good in a spiritual sense. This doctrine causes us to recognize our complete need for salvation and the sovereign grace of God to regenerate and bring us to faith in Christ Jesus, as salvation belongs to the Lord (Jonah 2:9).
