What is wrong with the sinner's prayer?

Answered in 1 source

The sinner's prayer is often viewed as an artificial formula that can mislead individuals about true conversion.

The sinner's prayer, as commonly practiced, can be detrimental to genuine conversion because it may imply that reciting certain words guarantees salvation, regardless of the heart's condition. This approach disregards the necessary work of the Holy Spirit in regenerating an individual's heart prior to any confession of faith. Authentic repentance and faith spring from an internally worked conviction, and reducing the act of coming to Christ to a mere recitation of a prayer can diminish the significance of personal faith and the transformative work of God. Instead of relying on a prescribed prayer, individuals should be encouraged to seek Christ genuinely from their hearts, leading to an authentic relationship with Him.
