What leads to true repentance?

Answered in 1 source

True repentance is led by an understanding of our sinfulness and God's holiness, often spurred by the work of the Holy Spirit.

True repentance begins when we recognize our sinfulness in light of God's holiness and justice. As Jesus illustrated in Luke 13:4-5, calamity should remind us of our precarious state before God, encouraging us to repent. The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in this process by convincing us of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8). A sincere acknowledgment of our sin, coupled with a heartfelt desire to change, opens the door to God's grace, as we see in Romans 2:4, where Paul writes that it is God's kindness that leads us to repentance. This understanding allows us to respond to God's call to turn to Him and seek forgiveness.
