What makes Jesus different from earthly priests?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is different from earthly priests because He is appointed by God and fulfills the office with perfect obedience and ultimate authority.

The distinction between Jesus and earthly priests lies significantly in His divine appointment and the nature of His priesthood. According to Hebrews 5:4-6, Jesus did not take on the role of a high priest of His own accord; rather, He was called by God, affirming His legitimacy and authority. Earthly priests, such as those from the line of Aaron, were appointed based on lineage and could serve only temporarily, often failing in their duties. In contrast, Jesus’ priesthood is forever, as established by God's decree, making Him a priest not after the order of Aaron, but after the order of Melchizedek. This eternal position underlies His ability to save completely and to represent us without fail throughout eternity.
