What role does faith play in the context of grace and works?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is a gift from God and functions in response to His grace, not as a work that merits salvation.

In the context of salvation, faith is understood as an instrument through which individuals receive God’s grace, but it is not a work that contributes to salvation. Philippians 1:29 states, 'For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him but also to suffer for him.' Faith itself is a gift bestowed upon the elect by the Holy Spirit, enabling them to respond to God’s grace. The distinction is vital; while one may feel a duty to act according to faith, any perception that faith itself is a work would undermine the foundational truth of grace—that it is entirely undeserved. Faith’s role is thus to embrace the finished work of Christ, which is central to the doctrine of justification by faith alone.
