What role does fear play in our relationship with God?

Answered in 1 source

Fear plays a role of reverence in our relationship with God, reminding us of His holiness and sovereignty.

Fear, in a biblical sense, is often associated with reverential awe before God’s holiness and power. In 2 Samuel 9, Mephibosheth’s initial reaction upon meeting David was fear, as he understood the typical consequences for a rival lineage in a new king's court. However, this fear transformed into assurance when David proclaimed mercy instead of judgment. Likewise, the fear of the Lord in Proverbs is described as the beginning of wisdom—a recognition of our need for salvation and dependence on God. This fear is not meant to paralyze us but encourages a profound respect that leads to a deeper relationship with Him, as we learn to trust in His character as gracious and merciful.
