What role does God's sovereignty play in our afflictions?

Answered in 1 source

God's sovereignty ensures that all afflictions serve a divine purpose for believers' good.

In sovereign grace theology, God is utterly sovereign over all circumstances, including the afflictions His people experience. Romans 8:28 assures believers that 'all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.' This means that even the difficult and painful experiences believers face have a purpose in God's perfect plan. They are designed to refine faith, produce endurance, and lead to a deeper relationship with Him. Understanding God's sovereignty in our afflictions helps believers find hope and peace, knowing that He has a purpose behind every trial.
