Why are the poor in spirit considered blessed?

Answered in 1 source

The poor in spirit are blessed because they recognize their need for God and are promised the kingdom of heaven.

According to Matthew 5:3, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.' This beatitude emphasizes the condition of those who are spiritually aware of their need for God's grace. Just as Lazarus's physical poverty illustrated his spiritual neediness, so too does spiritual poverty mean recognizing one's own sinfulness and inability to save oneself. Those who are poor in spirit are blessed because they humbly seek God, and He promises that they will be filled with His grace and ultimately inherit the kingdom. This beatitude contrasts sharply with the self-sufficiency of the rich man, who was blind to his need for salvation.
