Why are the priesthood and sacrifices in the Old Testament significant?

Answered in 1 source

They serve as types and shadows pointing to Christ, the ultimate sacrifice and high priest.

The Old Testament priesthood and sacrifices were divinely appointed to foreshadow the coming of Christ. The priests were mediators between God and man, and their sacrifices symbolized atonement. However, these were never meant to offer true salvation; they directed attention to Christ, who is our great High Priest and the perfect sacrifice. By understanding these elements as pictures of Christ, we appreciate the fullness of God's redemptive plan and how it reveals the necessity of faith in Him for salvation.
