Why are traditions in religion seen as pitfalls?

Answered in 1 source

Traditions can become pitfalls when they detract from the pure gospel of Christ and lead to reliance on human works.

In the sermon, it is highlighted that many hold tightly to religious traditions, believing them to secure their relationship with God. However, Paul warns that such reliance can mask the truth of the gospel, which is centered on Christ alone. For instance, practices like baptism or strict adherence to a creed might be mistaken for essential indicators of faith. Yet, true acceptance before God is only through faith in Jesus Christ and His atoning work, not through the observance of human traditions. This concept is echoed in Colossians 2:8, which warns against being taken captive by philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition.
